Both classes support the party, just differently. Cleric heals (keeps the group alive). Chanter buffs the party (temporary boosts), heals as backup and fights up close. New to the terms? See the glossary.
Cleric vs Chanter at a glance
| Cleric | Chanter | |
|---|---|---|
| Weapon | mace and shield | staff and guard |
| Role | main healer; plays like a ranged caster while leveling | support: party buffs, backup heals, melee damage |
| Solo | very safe but slow | faster, good thanks to gap closers |
| Group | heals, cleanses, resurrects mid-fight | boosts the whole party's damage and speed, off-heals |
| Difficulty | medium | medium to higher (skill timing windows) |
| Damage | low | low to medium (more than Cleric) |
| Survivability | high (heals and shields) | medium |
| Group demand | very high — harder dungeons need one | high — groups like having one, but it won't replace a Cleric in hard content |
| Ping sensitivity | no reports of being worse than other classes; longer macro delay at 80+ ms | same as Cleric |
When should you pick Cleric?
- You want a guaranteed party spot. Cleric is the only class with a combat resurrection: the Summon Resurrection stigma (stigmas are extra skills you slot from level 22). Groups pick Clerics for it (Game8, MMO Codex). Ynoki: Clerics get dungeon invites instantly.
- You like a calm, safe playstyle. Self-heals and shields make you very hard to kill solo (ExpCarry, Game8, Ynoki).
- You're fine killing slowly. ExpCarry, MMO Codex and Ynoki all say Cleric solo is slower than pure DPS classes.
- But don't just stand there. Dungeon rewards depend on your contribution, so a Cleric who only heals can walk out with nothing. Attack whenever nobody needs healing (couga54).
- aLuckyRO: the Cleric macro (several skills on one key — see the macro guide) is simpler than Chanter's.

When should you pick Chanter?
- You want to fight, not just heal. Chanter swings a staff in melee. aLuckyRO puts it bluntly: "you're an offensive class — if you want to heal, play Cleric".
- You enjoy buffing others. Mantras (always-on buffs) give the whole party damage and speed, Power of the Storm cuts cooldowns, and Recuperation heals and cleanses (couga54, Game8, ExpCarry). Ynoki: Chanter shines most in an organized static group.
- You play a lot solo. Leveling is smooth thanks to Rushing Smash (a leap that resets on kill with its level-12 specialization) and mana from Onslaught (couga54, aLuckyRO). Society Of Gaming and Ynoki also rate Chanter faster solo than Cleric.
- You don't mind timing. Your main damage needs Dark Crush pressed within 2–3 s of specific skills (couga54). Game8 rates Chanter's ease of use 2/5, Cleric's 3/5.

Do Cleric and Chanter work in the same party?
Yes, and in hard dungeons it's the best setup: Chanter lowers the damage the party takes, so the Cleric keeps mana for big heals (Ynoki, Society Of Gaming). Some effects don't stack, though. Per the in-game tooltips, Chanter's Undefeated Mantra doesn't stack with Cleric's Light of Protection (the higher level wins), and Power of the Storm doesn't stack with Earth's Blessing from the Earth Punishment stigma. couga54 adds Wave Blow and Debilitating Mark (both lower the boss's damage). That's why a Cleric swaps Light of Protection for another stigma when there's a Chanter in the party — our Cleric guide says the same.
Where do the sources disagree?
- Can Chanter be the only healer? aLuckyRO: Chanter can heal some dungeons alone when there's no Cleric. Ynoki: main-healing a disorganized group in hard content "usually ends in failure". Takeaway: Chanter is enough for easy dungeons like your first one (Krao Cave); hard content needs a Cleric.
- Who deals less? couga54: on equal gear, Chanter and Cleric are the two lowest-damage classes. Everyone agrees Cleric is the lower of the two.
- Cleric difficulty. couga54 and Game8: medium. aLuckyRO: Cleric is very strong early compared to other classes. Society Of Gaming: healing is easier than in the original Aion, but you still carry the group.
- Ping. No source says either class suffers more from high ping than others. aLuckyRO and MMO Codex only suggest raising the macro delay to 40–50 ms if your ping is over 80 ms.
