What makes a class beginner-friendly?
If you've never played an MMO, three things matter:
- It forgives mistakes — lots of HP, defense or self-healing. Standing in the wrong spot doesn't kill you instantly.
- Simple rotation — few skills that must be pressed at an exact moment.
- Positioning isn't everything — you don't need to stay behind the boss or hold a precise range.
The "strongest" class on a tier list doesn't have to tick any of these boxes.
Ranking for a brand-new player
| Rank | Class | Why | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Gladiator | easy (Game8; couga54 "Difficulty: Easy"), heals off its attacks so you rarely need potions; Game8's and Destructoid's top pick for beginners; Mein-MMO rates its beginner suitability "high" | short on mana early on (aLuckyRO); keep your buffs up before pulls |
| 2 | Cleric | own heals and shields, so it barely dies solo (ExpCarry, Game8); Mein-MMO rates it "very high" for beginners; groups want it for the resurrection | kills slower than DPS classes; in dungeons you still need to hit things, because loot depends on contribution (couga54) |
| 3 | Templar | shield tank; Mein-MMO rates it "very high" for beginners: "forgives many mistakes" | in groups you lead the fight and position the boss — stressful in your first dungeons; slow solo |
| 4 | Elementalist | Earth Spirit takes the boss's attention and you heal yourself; Game8 "relatively easy", aLuckyRO "the simplest class" | sources disagree: couga54 says "Hard", Mein-MMO warns pet handling can overwhelm beginners in chaotic fights; fragile (Game8 2/5) |
| 5 | Chanter | levels well solo, useful in every group | main damage needs a skill pressed inside a 2–3 s window (couga54); Game8 ease 2/5 |
| 5 | Ranger | shoots from 20 m, very mobile | weak in the first levels — damage only shows up with gear (aLuckyRO, r/Aion2 thread Oct 5); ease: FRESHY "the easiest", Game8 2/5 — sources disagree |
| 7 | Sorcerer | top AoE damage | squishiest class (Game8 survivability 1/5), "harder than Gladiator or Ranger" (DankRNG) |
| 8 | Assassin | highest burst windows | hard (Game8 ease 1/5, Mein-MMO "low" beginner suitability), fragile, everything depends on staying behind the boss |
The two 5th places are a tie — both are middle of the pack for different reasons.
Sources split on the top spot: Mein-MMO rates Templar and Cleric "very high" for beginners and Gladiator one step lower. We still put Gladiator first because Game8 and Destructoid agree on it, and it kills much faster solo than Templar or Cleric.
Why not Assassin or Sorcerer first?
Not because they're weak — they sit at S and A on tier lists. They punish exactly the mistakes new players make most:
- Assassin loses its damage bonus when facing the boss, and dies fast from the front. One veteran put it as "several times the work of a Gladiator for the same or less damage" (Arthars via couga54).
- Sorcerer has little HP and no block or teleport, so one missed AoE and you're on the floor.
If you love them, play them — just expect your first dungeons to be harder.
Gladiator or Cleric?
- You like melee and just want to hit things → Gladiator.
- You'd rather stand at the back and have a guaranteed group spot → Cleric. While leveling it plays like a ranged caster (couga54); you heal only when needed.
- You want to be the wall the party hides behind → Templar.

First-hours tips (any class)
- Every class guide has a level-by-level "what to press now" plan — start there, e.g. Gladiator or Cleric.
- Plan your first days with first week and leveling 1–45; unknown terms are in the glossary.
- Ignore tier lists for now. Class gaps while leveling 1–45 are small, and balance shifts with patches.
- Character deletion takes 24 hours and works from level 1 (NC maintenance, Oct 5), so a wrong pick is cheap to fix early.
